WESTMINSTER, Colo -- The Westminster Police Department has seen an increase in odometer fraud cases across the metro area. In these cases, victims unknowingly purchase used vehicles with manipulated odometers displaying lower mileage than the actual amount. This deception often results in financial loss, as buyers pay more than the fair-market value of the vehicle.
Problems may also arise when trying to title and register the vehicle at the DMV, as the title could be forged or manipulated to match the fraudulent odometer reading. There are several steps WPD recommends individuals take to protect themselves:
- Run a Vehicle History Report
- Do Your Research
- Obtain Necessary Documents & Information
- Complete a Bill of Sale
- Avoid High-Pressure Sales
